Stacie Boschma is a whole lot of things: a poet, performer, freelance writer, web developer, humorist, internet junkie, southerner, fan of tequila and red wine, a lesbian, and a classic May-born Gemini. Her resume is a little bit of a nightmare. She started the blog Simianbrain late in 2003, writing under her long-time online pseudonym shamanic, and though it pretty much just gathers dust these days, she leaves it there on the interwebs because it's her dust.
She joined the Newshoggers crew in April 2007, and her focus as a writer here is on the principles that underlay our democracy and our sense of what America is, means, and should be. She believes in America as a moral good, and understands herself and other Americans as acting out an incredibly noble dream that we collectively refer to as "America." She gets really happy in those moments when America lives up to the ideals that have driven it, and gets very angry when it falls short. These are the key things to know when you read her.
In October 2007, Stacie released her debut album of spoken word performance poetry, "Happy Rainbow Poems from the Unicorn Petting Zoo", and tours the country to support it as time and resources allow. Poetry, that very living and very vibrant art form, is her first and enduring love.
Stacie lives in Decatur, Georgia, with her dogs Shaman and Moloch.
